Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in an academic field or education required.

  • At least three years’ experience in higher education teaching, preferably in a community college setting working with remedial students required. 
  • Computer literacy required. 
  • Strong computer skills and demonstrated ability to maintain student database/consolidate data into statistical reports required. 
  • One year of experience in higher education, caseload management, or tutoring of students at the secondary or postsecondary level or one year of experience working with disadvantaged youth, preferably low income, first generation at the postsecondary level. 
  • Thorough and demonstrated working knowledge and competencies in the use of Microsoft Office products, including Power Point, Excel, and Word. 
  • Efficient in the use of and or capable of learning and utilizing other computer database management systems (preferable Blumen or Access database management systems). 
  • Strong, positive oral communication skills (for person and telephone communication) and strong writing skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with persons from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Demonstrated familiarity with and competence in office management and office organizational functions and attention to detail and accuracy. 
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare various general reports that may or may not incorporate data. 
  • Ability to work during fast-paced, intensive periods. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of adult learning theory and principles and principles of self-directed learning. 
  • Must be able to travel, on occasion, for appropriate Student Support Services events and activities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with tutoring programs and supervising peer tutors preferred. 
  • At least three years’ experience teaching developmental reading, writing, math or gateway courses preferred. 
  • Knowledge and experience with computer aided learning preferred. 
  • Background similar to that of SSS eligible participants strongly preferred. 
  • Two-three years’ experience in teaching, tutoring, or supplemental instruction of students at the secondary or postsecondary level. 
  • Experience developing and conducting/coordinating workshops and mentoring. 
  • Experience working in a TRiO program.

Position Description

Reporting to the Director of the TRiO Student Support Services Program, the Retention Specialist provides a comprehensive and culturally-sensitive set of support services designed to ensure the academic success of students through tutorial and case management functions. The position also carries responsibilities for specified data collection and reporting requirements and other administrative functions that are essential to the operation of the TRiO Student Support Services Program.

Specific duties of Retention Specialist: 

  • Manage an assigned case load of student advisees, communicating with advisees regularly and in a timely manner. 
  • Assist in assessments of participants. 
  • Develop, monitor, and review personal education plans with program participants (advisees). 
  • Demonstrably incorporate adult learning theory/principles and self-directed learning theory/principles in working with advisees and in presentations and workshops. 
  • Develop and conduct success skills workshops and assessments for Student Support Services participants. 
  • Hire, train, and supervise peer tutors. 
  • Oversee the recruitment, selection, scheduling, and evaluation of tutors for the Student Support Services program. 
  • Coordinate and monitor tutor schedules, including matching tutors with participants, recording, tracking, and reporting participant progress, attendance, and performance. 
  • Maintain and update student records. 
  • Oversee the use of computer-assisted tutoring with Student Support Services participants. 
  • Collect data to support specified project learning outcomes and evaluation. 
  • Prepare reports, disseminate information to participants, and assist with evaluation of performance outcomes. 
  • Assist in the distribution of academic monitoring and early alert reports to instructors and in the scheduling of follow-up meetings with students. 
  • Organize and maintain an accurate and complete database on Student Support Services participants, activities, services provided, and correspondence. 
  • Produce and maintain monthly and annual reports, including statistically-based reports. 
  • Maintain an accurate participant database and assist the Director in developing and generating the Annual Performance Report. 
  • Provide administrative and office support, manage the front office, and greet students and guests. 
  • Assist the Director in reconciling and monitoring the program budget. 
  • Publicize Student Support Services Program events on an events calendar and update the Student Support Services Program Facebook page. 
  • Order and maintain an inventory of supplies, materials, and equipment. 
  • Assist the Director in preparing and reconciling purchase requisitions, travel requests, expense statements, and other fiscal records. 
  • Assist the Director to develop and prepare the Annual Performance Report.
