Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution required. One year of relevant and appropriate experience working in a program and/or with disadvantaged and at-risk students. Knowledgeable of retention and academic strategies, and financial literacy. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with faculty, staff, and students. Ability to properly and accurately document within the prescribed guidelines all contacts, conference, and counseling sessions with students. Ability to relate to people from differing educational, economic and social backgrounds. Work experience in an office setting; record keeping experience. Excellent customer service skills with internal and external customers.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree from an accredited institution.  Ability to work well with the public in high pressure situations. Ability to multitask and to perform detailed tasks accurately. Strong computer skills with a focus on office applications. Two or more years of experience in a community college setting or educational institution.

Job Title:  Retention Specialist

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Assists students with alleviating obstacles to academic success. Monitors Aviso Early Alert System to provide proactive student support; identify behaviors that indicated a lack of academic success strategies; and implement intervention plans by connecting students with support staff and other resources to improve academic standing. Provides direction to students for navigating academic and non-academic resources on campus, online, and in the community. Assist student with setting goals and identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles in academic and career planning. Develop rapport and trust with students to support successful goal completion. Monitor student progress and conduct advising sessions with students regularly. Assist students and instructors solve issues that arise, which impact academic goals, persistence, and attendance. Maintain level of confidentiality regarding documents received and other matters involving students and the program. Work selected nights during the month. Serve on campus standing committee as assigned. Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position. Performs other duties as assigned by the TRIO Student Support Services Director and Associate Vice President of Student Services.

Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism and confidentiality while interacting with internal and external stakeholders while remaining adaptable, proactive, resourceful, and efficient.  Excellent communication skills both orally and in writing.  Ability to prioritize, attention to details. Proficiency in computer and office software applications.
 
SALARY:  
 
Position is contingent on annual allocation of grant funds from the U.S. Department of Education’s Trio Student Support Grant.

Salary commensurate with education and work experience. Benefits include paid state holidays, paid annual and sick
leave, and the State of North Carolina Benefits Program.
