Position Description
The Security Officer monitors the activities of subordinate part-time Security personnel. The Security Officer employs necessary safety and security measures to provide a safe environment in which to work and study. Position has an “on-call” component on an alternating basis with other full-time Security Team members. Schedule: Days will be determined; Working hours will be 11:00pm - 6:00am Essential duties and responsibilities: 1) Must provide leadership for subordinate (part-time) officers in department. Must be able to prioritize activities to accomplish duties in a timely manner. Must be able to calmly handle emergency situations. Must possess above average diplomacy and professionalism in dealing with faculty, staff, students and the general public. Respond to calls for service and supervise part-time Security Officers at incident. Must be willing to accept other assignments from the Director of Safety and Security, or designee. Must be able to work a mixed schedule of days, evenings, and weekends at any campus. Related Responsibilities: Performance Requirements: 1) Controls access to and from buildings through mobile and walking patrols. 2) Controls building lighting to eliminate waste, reports lighting conditions to Director of Facilities. 3) Performs visible inspection of hygienic appearances of facility and reports discrepancies to Director of Facilities. 4) Directs subordinate P/T Security personnel in the control of traffic to ensure compliance with Mitchell Community College rules and regulations on parking and vehicle operation. 5) Provides written communication to the Director of Safety and Security, or designee, on matters concerning safety and security on campus. 6) Acts as response coordinator in case of fire and/or evacuation. 7) Possesses thorough knowledge of the campus facilities and equipment locations. 8) Possesses general familiarity with workstations of facility employees and names of administration and faculty. 9) Through the Director of Safety and Security provides the college administration with incident reports of anything concerning college safety & security. 10) Provide input for improvements to the safety and security function. Safety Functions: Participates in scheduled training and updates on methods to keep self and others safe. Follows safe work practices and wears appropriate personal protective equipment when necessary. Maintains knowledge of location and contents of departmental policies and procedures. Maintains knowledge of location and contents of facility Safety Data Sheets. Maintains knowledge and proficiency of assignments during implementation of facility disaster and emergency preparedness plans. Actively seeks out opportunities to improve safety conditions in the facility, i.e., reporting spills in corridors and other floors to housekeeping when discovered or notifying appropriate individuals when adverse conditions are suspected or noted. Uniforms: A standard College approved security uniform will be provided and worn at all times while on duty. This uniform should only be worn while on official Mitchell Community College business and not worn outside of work hours. Physical Requirements: Walking, running, reaching, bending, lifting (50 lbs.), grasping, pushing, good hand coordination, ability to communicate well with others, ability to distinguish smells and temperatures, ability to hear and respond to pages, ability to communicate, read and write in English, ability to remain calm under stress, and ability to problem-solve or report problem identification to their supervisor.
