Requirements:
Associate's degree and holds a NCITLB (North Carolina Interpreter and Transliterator License) or a BEI ( Board of Interpreting) Certification or National Interpreter/Transliterator Certification
Preferred Qualifications
Preferences:
Associate's degree in Sign Language Interpreting or ASL linguistics
Proficiency in other modes of communication for the Deaf, that includes but is not limited to Cued Speech, Signed English and Oral Interpreting
Two years of experience interpreting and or transliterating in a post-secondary setting
Position Description
Job Summary
This position provides interpreting or transliterating services for students and staff at Wake Technical Community College, either in the classrooms or in other college approved settings.
Responsibilities and Duties (*Essential Functions)
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the essential job functions satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the primary job functions herein described.
*Prepares appropriately for each instructional meeting by reviewing course materials and prepares technical vocabulary for classroom interpreting and development of professional skills
*Provides classroom and on-call interpreting/transliterating (i.e., Individualized Learning Center (ILC), teacher or advisor conferences, graduation ceremonies, and other school functions)
*Works as a team interpreter in classrooms or meetings as requested.
*Substitutes for other interpreters on an as-needed basis
Assists with scheduling temporary interpreting staff for team interpreting to ensure each student is matched with interpreters with appropriate language skills for the maximum communication access; follows language protocols set by the Coordinator for individuals with atypical language needs.
Develops training programs for the DSS interpreting staff
Promotes disability awareness and helps the school staff, faculty, and students develop positive attitudes toward disabilities
Follows a schedule provided by the Coordinator for each semester
Assists the Coordinator with the implementation and management of the professional development programs offered such as the peer observation program, partnering with outside community agencies and/or government partners for training, and the mentor/mentee program by acting as a resource to peer mentors.
Reviews and maintains professional development documentation for the programs that they are managing such as the peer observation program, student intern program,etc.
Provides support to other full time staff if necessary on their respective programs.
Complete an annual applied benchmark project on an individual or group basis
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Facilitates effective interactions between all Deaf and Hearing faculty, staff and students at Wake Technical Community College.
Possesses the ability to listen and interpret/transliterate both receptively and expressively, in all settings in the college.
Ability to arrive on-time for assignments and maintain commitments to student meetings
Follows the Code of Professional Conduct as written by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf
