Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree (masters preferred) in education/ or related field with two years of professional experience, preferably in a community college environment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Information Technology Requirements:  Must be able to operate a computer equipped with such software as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, SPSS, Microsoft Project specialized decision science software, etc.  Able to use Outlook email and conduct research on the Internet. Operate a variety of specialized equipment such as laser and color printer, computer projection device, fax machine, photocopier, telephone, etc.
 
Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated machines including telephone, computer, copier, calculator, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Position involves mostly sedentary work, but may require walking or standing for brief periods of time. 
 
Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
 
Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability to speak to and/or signal to people in order to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to assistants.  Includes the receiving of information and instructions from the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.
 
Language Ability:  Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, books, manuals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, etc. Requires the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence.
 
Intelligence:   Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; and to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.  Is able to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems in order to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
 
Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.
 
Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; utilize decimals; figure percentages; apply algebraic principles; and utilize descriptive and inferential statistics.
 
Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.
 
Motor Coordination:  Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using automated equipment.
 
Manual Dexterity:  Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, office equipment, computer, calculator, control knobs, switches, etc.  Must have moderate levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.
 
Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:  Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.
 
Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to relate to and deal with people in situations beyond receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with an emergency.
 
Physical Communication:  Requires the ability to talk and/or hear (talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words; hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear.)

Position Description

Under supervision position will provide advising and registration assistance to a specified case load. Through identification of student needs, the Success Navigator will provide available services, support, and resources to increase academic readiness, progress, and success. The Success Navigator is responsible for creating and documenting a financial, career, and academic plan with every incoming student in their case load.  The Success Navigator will also help to create and approve an electronic Student Education Plan (SEP) which will allow students to register for classes (from this plan). Success Navigators are responsible for creating and maintaining a database to assist and support students, regularly checking academic progress, and providing follow-up and follow-through when necessary. Position will participate in professional development trainings related to the College's Student Information System(s) and Portal; financial aid, career, and academic planning; advising; and registration. Position reports to the Lead Success Navigator.

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this position.

  •  Attend provided trainings to become knowledgeable regarding PCC resources, program and transfer opportunities, and requirements.
  •  Provide strong and effective support for the College's Strategic Plan and Student Success initiatives and provide assistance with meeting the goals and objectives of the Plan and initiatives. 
  • Develop and sign-off on a Student Education Plan (SEP) with each assigned advisee. Intervene when students deviate from established plan. Ensure each student's progression toward his or her academic and career goals is monitored.
  • Utilize student retention and completion data and research to inform decisions regarding student success and advisement. Collaborate with College personnel to develop advisement outcomes and plans for continuous improvement.
  •  Work with students in case load to create, document, and approve a financial plan, a career plan, and an academic plan. Creating these plans will involve: 
  • Teach students how to navigate the Student Portal and other PCC IT resources.
  • Advising students on degree planning, transfer planning, as well as program opportunities and requirements.
  •  When necessary, provide e-advising. 
  • Provide assistance with course selection/schedules by:
    • Advising students to balance their work and class schedule.
    • Assisting students in choosing the appropriate mode of course instruction.
    • Facilitating and managing schedule changes and PCC's Withdrawal Process for new and continuing students.
  • Monitor advisees' progress and provide regular, customized feedback.
  • Provide periodic grade reviews and mid-semester check to review grades; meet with students who are having academic difficulty or who are on academic probation.
  •  Monitor and work with appropriate department(s)/office(s) to remove registration flags/holds when necessary. 
  • Adhere to PCC's academic policies and procedures.
  • Intervene, provide support, and develop next steps for students facing academic problems identified through Early Alert, as well as those facing academic probation, suspension, or other issues.
  •  Collaborate with Career Services to provide workshops and interventions.
  • Collaborate with and assist Admissions Counselors.
  • Collaborate and assist with New Student Orientation.
  •  Advise/register students after New Student Orientation, during Add/Drop periods, and for late-start classes.   
  • Provide referrals for services based upon individualized student needs. Refers and connects students with relevant College resources.
  •  Work with faculty and staff from your assigned division to develop guidelines and information for particular program areas. 
  • Assign and transition students to a faculty advisor after successful completion of two major semesters at PCC. 
  •  Collaborate with Distance Learning, so students learn and can demonstrate the ability to navigate Moodle – Distance Learning will be responsible for providing the actual training; Success Navigators will be responsible for making sure the students in their case load attend and complete the provided training.
  •  Collaborate with areas of the College to support Student Success initiatives and to provide students with accurate and timely information to make informed and positive decisions. 
  • Teach ACA 111 or 122 in fall and spring semesters.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
