Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, search engines, and web research
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collect/compile pertinent data
  • Ability to work with individuals of all socio-economic, cultural, and diverse backgrounds

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Experience in advising, success coaching, and/or academic counseling at a community college
  • Experience at a community college either as a student or employee
  • Knowledge/experience of student success/retention strategies

Position Description

 

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION

** Position hire is subject to budget approval and funding allocation from the NC Community College System.  **

This is a temporary position that is effective until December 18, 2020. This position will assist potential and current students in the successful identification and completion of academic, professional, and personal goals by enhancing their ability to navigate through college.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Advisement

  • Assist success coaches with academic advisement and registration for new students
  • Serve as primary advisor for special credit (non-degree seeking) students
  • Assist with career advising, placement testing, and job placement as needed
  • Develop and maintain a database for tracking student progress and advisement; produce reports on data collected; maintain notes of advising sessions to track hours, issues, and outcomes
  • Assist students with identification of their academic, professional and personal goals, paths to those goals, and appropriate programs of study to meet those goals
  • Work to identify and resolve student barriers and obtain support to meet specific needs.
  • Assist students and faculty to problem-solve issues related to progress towards academic goals, persistence, and attendance
  •  Monitor students' academic progress using retention software (Aviso) and provide student follow-up
  • Intervene with students who are at-risk of academic review, warning, and/or probation
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all requirements, courses, and programs at HCC
  • Recruitment
  • Assist with the development and implementation of recruitment activities as needed
  • Coordinate online recruiting meetings and presentations for potential students
  • Attend recruiting events and College nights at the discretion of the director of enrollment management
  • Work with the College's career coaches and coordinator of high school programs to reach out to high school populations

 

 

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with graduation rehearsal and ceremonies as needed
  • Participate in new student orientation and campus tours as needed to establish rapport with new students
  • Some evening and weekend events may be required
  • Participate in appropriate professional development workshops, seminars and conferences
  • Meet with academic deans on a consistent basis to discuss programmatic changes
  • Be knowledgeable of area four year university baccalaureate degree programs that align with HCC programs for transfer students as covered under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) and the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA)
  • Be knowledgeable of college policies and procedures regarding admission standards, testing and educational program requirements
  • Encourage and support students' participation in college activities leading progression and retention
  • Work closely with the high school programs coordinator and faculty advisors to maintain a high level of communication and collaboration between advising areas of the College
  • Contribute to the attainment of college, division, and department goals
  • May drive college owned vehicles.
  • Other duties as assigned
