Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
· Experience in advising, success coaching, and/or academic counseling
· Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
· Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, search engines, and web research
· Ability to manage multiple projects and collect/compile pertinent data
· Ability to work with individuals of all socio-economic, cultural, and diverse backgrounds
Preferred Qualifications
· Master degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
· Experience at a community college either as a student or employee
· Experience in advising, success coaching, and/or academic counseling at a community college
· Knowledge/experience of student success/retention strategies
Position Description
Statement of Primary Purpose
The Success Coach will assist students in the successful identification and completion of academic, professional, and personal goals by enhancing their ability to navigate through college.
Essential Functions
- The Success Coach is responsible for monitoring and supporting students as they begin their educational journey. They will meet with prospective and new students to discuss the Navigating College program, answer questions about the College, and help them to establish a plan to get where they want to go and become a settled and successful HCC student.
- Conduct comprehensive academic advising for college programs using a blended method such as the appreciative advising model.
- Assist students with identification of their academic, professional and personal goals, paths to those goals, and appropriate programs of study to meet those goals.
- Collaborate using multiple college services to create Student Learning Outcomes which support expectations, student wellness and wisdom, enhancing the instruction experience and developing the whole student.
- Serve as the primary advisor for new curriculum students until program benchmark hours are met or as needed
- Work to identify and resolve student barriers and obtain support to meet specific needs. Assist students and faculty to problem-solve issues related to progress towards academic goals, persistence, and attendance
- Monitor students’ academic progress using case management and retention software (Aviso) and provide student follow-up
- Update and maintain progress summary sheets/evaluations for caseload
- Intervene with students who are at-risk of academic review, warning, and/or probation
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of all requirements, courses, and programs (including developmental courses) at HCC
- Maintain notes of advising sessions to track contact hours, issues, and outcomes of advising sessions
Additional Responsibilities
- Assist in recruitment efforts as needed
- Participate in new student orientation and campus tours as needed to establish rapport with new students. Some evening and weekend events may be required
- Participate in appropriate professional development workshops, seminars and conferences.
- Meet with academic deans on an annual basis to discuss programmatic changes
- Be knowledgeable of area four year university baccalaureate degree programs that align with HCC programs for transfer students as covered under the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) and the Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA)
- Be knowledgeable of college policies and procedures regarding admission standards, testing and educational program requirements
- Encourage and support students’ participation in college activities leading to first year progression and increased retention
- Assist faculty within ACA courses with class presentations and instruction as needed
- Work closely with the high school programs coordinator and faculty advisors to maintain a high level of communication and collaboration between advising areas of the College
- Coordinate events, webinars, and training for the students in areas of need. Develop and present lessons, workshops, etc. to assist students with skills and knowledge to navigate college processes. Create similar education for faculty and staff as needed.
- Explore the HCC website with students
- Contribute to the attainment of college, division, and department goals
- Work to ensure the best possible experience for students.
- Facilitate a success coach/student relationship by building rapport and trust in order to support successful goal completion.
- Participate on college committees
- Collect/compile/track Navigating College SLO and other data as requested
- Assist in the advancement of the NCCCS Performance Measures
- May drive college owned vehicles.
- Other duties as assigned
