Minimum Qualifications
(1) Bachelor’s degree in education, student affairs, academic/career counseling, social work, or related area, or equivalent experience.
(2) Minimum of two years’ student advising experience in a postsecondary institution, preferably a community college.
(3) Experience serving low-income, first-generation students, students with disabilities, and/or students from diverse backgrounds.
(4) Knowledge of theories and best practices in college student success.
(5) Knowledge of expectations for satisfactory academic progress for continuous college enrollment and financial aid eligibility;
(6) Knowledge of university transfer process and requirements.
(7) Effective interpersonal and oral/written communication skills.
(8) Ability to establish trust and rapport with a diverse constituency of students, and to effectively collaborate with internal college partners and external community resources in support of student success.
(9) Experience thoroughly and confidentially maintaining student records.
(10) Experience planning and facilitating programs and events.
(11) Familiarity with disability services.
(12) Computer skills including database management, word processing, and spreadsheet applications.
(13) Demonstrated willingness to advocate for disadvantaged students.
(14) Familiarity with federal grant programs, such as SSS, and applicable regulations.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred: Preference given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project's target population; bilingual in Spanish.
Position Description
Position Closes: February 8, 2023 (February 8th is the priority deadline, however interviews will be ongoing until the position is filled)
The Success Coach provides service delivery of the College’s federally-funded TRiO Student Support Services grant. The multi-year project, new in 2020 at Alamance Community College, contributes directly to the College’s vision: From access to success: Transforming lives and the communities we serve. The focus is retention, graduation, and transfer of students who are low-income, first generation college attenders, and/or have disabilities. The Success Coach works under the supervision of the TRiO SSS director to recruit, select, counsel, coach/advise, and offer enrichment opportunities for participants that address the enrollment, retention, graduation, and transfer objectives of the project.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES:
- Participates in recruitment, selection, and intake of student participants.
- Establishes and maintains productive coaching/advising relationships with case load of participants to provide academic, career, personal, financial aid, and transfer advising.
- Guides participants to develop and follow their “Personal Success Plans.”
- Collaborates with faculty academic advisors, course instructors, disability services counselors, financial aid staff, and tutoring/academic support staff to provide individualized and group support programs and opportunities for participants.
- Maintains confidential records and case notes of student participants.
- Tracks and records student contact and participation using Blumen and other appropriate data base management systems.
- Plans and facilitates educational and cultural enrichment opportunities, summer bridge activities, and similar to strengthen the academic and self-management skills of participants.
- Serves as a chaperon during college visits and field trips.
- Conducts formative and summative program evaluation activities.
- Performs other administrative and service delivery tasks related to the TRiO SSS grant as directed by supervisor.
