Minimum Qualifications

Prior experience working in a library setting is required.

Associate degree required.

Preferred Qualifications

Two years prior experience with circulation routines and reference services preferred.

Two years prior experience with Library of Congress classification and Evergreen systems, experience with Library of Congress, experience with teaching or tutoring, and/or experience using Colleague preferred.

Associate's degree in Library Science or Bachelor's degree preferred.

 

Position Description

Description

Technical Assistant, Learning Resource Center (Data Management) participates in a variety of activities and operations in support of Learning Resource Center services; serves as evening supervisor for library staff and tutors (both online and in-person); organizes library programming to promote student engagement and increased research skills; answers advanced reference questions during evening hours.

Examples of Duties

Essential and other responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions:

  1. Provide reference and research services in a variety of print and online sources.
  2. Perform basic circulation desk duties: check in/out materials including books, periodicals, audio-visual; reserve books; collect fines; contact other libraries and reserve books; notify patrons about receipt of reserved books.
  3. Organize events and library programming to promote student engagement and increased research skills; participate in Grab-n-go, Night Owl, and other Learning Resource Center (LRC) workshops; take an active role in instructing/assisting students during workshops.
  4. Provide bibliographic instruction and facility tours for evening classes.
  5. Train and assist part-time staff in the assigned functions of their position. 
  6. Responsible for closing library, Writing and Academic Support Center facilities.
  7. Participate in acquisitions and collection development by recommending both online and print materials to provide sources for student assignments and materials for recreational reading.
  8. Assist patrons operating library equipment, such as printers and photocopiers; assist patrons with basic questions about software, such as Moodle, Portal, student email.
  9. Operate ID badge station; enforce all badge policies.
  10. Direct students and employees during emergency situations and drills.

Department Specific Duties:

  1. Keeps track of library stats and prepares data for the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).
  2. Serves as integrated library system (ILS) expert and runs reports in ILS for Executive Directors.
  3. Maintains circulation manual.

 

Marginal Functions:

  1. Participate in professional development activities and required employee training.
  2. Remove library flags in Colleague for student registration.
  3. Answer and route telephone calls.
  4. Direct students to other locations on campus.
  5. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Working Conditions

Knowledge of:

  • NC Live, Gale, PubMed, AHEC (Area Health Education Centers), PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations) and other academic sources and platforms. Both APA and MLA citation formats.
    MARC records, AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules 2) cataloging rules, and ALA (American Library Association) ethical regulations and copyright rules.
  • Basic library terminology and services.
  • Principles and procedures of library cataloging & content management systems.
  • Practices and techniques of equipment operation.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • Pertinent Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Basic mathematical calculations.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Recent developments, current literature and sources of information regarding library operations.
  • Library operations, policies and procedures.
  • Types and uses of library materials.
  • Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment.
  • English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Alpha, numerical and LC filing systems.

 

Ability to:

  • Use Library of Congress classification system, the library OPAC, and SIRSI (or another Integrated Library System).
  • Learn material location, shelving and retrieval practices.
  • Operate computerized acquisition, cataloging, bibliographical and circulation system data bases.
  • Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
  • Interpret, explain, and enforce departmental policies and procedures.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Operate a variety of mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.

 

Environmental Conditions:
The employee should have the ability to effectively handle a work environment and conditions which involve an office workspace and working closely with others.

The employee must maintain the office environments by maintaining equipment and supplies, ensuring overall cleanliness, functionality, and conformance to OSHA standards to provide a safe work environment.

Physical Conditions:
Physical and marginal functions require the ability to maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities, which may include the following: standing, walking or sitting for extended periods, moderate lifting and carrying, general manual dexterity, operating assigned equipment, and extended exposure to computer screens.

The employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, reading and writing, operating assigned equipment, communicating with others, and handling varied tasks simultaneously. Additionally, the employee must maintain mental capacity, which permits making sound decisions and using good judgment, demonstrating intellectual capabilities, and evaluating the effectiveness of programs and personnel.

Scheduling Conditions:
This is a full-time, 12-month position, which requires the employee to be on campus or at an approved alternate location for at least thirty-six hours per week, Monday through Thursday, 8:00am-5:00pm, and Friday, 8:00am-12:00pm.

 
Traveling Conditions:
Local travel between the Caldwell campus, Watauga campus, or any off-campus sites may be needed. Out of state travel is limited, but may be required for training and conferences.
