Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in student personnel services, education, counseling, or closely related field from an accredited college or university. Two years of appropriate and relevant professional experience working in a TRIO federal program or similar related program for disadvantaged and at-risk college students. 

Preferred Qualifications

Advising and/or counseling experience in a community college preferred.

Position Description


Assists students in alleviating both on- and off-campus obstacles to academic success. Schedules college transfer seminars and workshops each semester.  Coordinates study skills workshops and activities each semester.  Collaborates and confers with tutorial staff as needed.  Collaborates with the Student Activities Coordinator when scheduling campus visits to four-year institutions. Encourages personal and academic achievement through goal-setting and other techniques. Promotes the development of students’ positive self-concept and self-esteem.  Conducts individual and/or group counseling sessions. Monitors and logs students’ academic progress on a daily basis. Consults and collaborates with faculty and staff as needed. Collaborate with TRIO colleagues on financial literacy and the financial aid process. Assists in campus-wide recruitment and retention efforts. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Support Services.



Knowledge of barriers to postsecondary education faced by low income and potential first-generation college students.  Professional or personal experiences in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting TRIO participants.  An ability to properly and accurately document within prescribed guidelines all contacts, conferences, and counseling sessions with students. Working knowledge of counseling theories and techniques. An ability to communicate and work with tutor/academic coaches, peer mentor/coaches, faculty, staff, and disadvantaged students. Knowledge of the various community agencies and their services. An understanding of and commitment to the mission, goals, and objectives of the College.



Position is contingent on annual allocation of grant funds from the U.S. Department of Education’s Trio Student Support Grant.  The project period ends August 31, 2025.
