Minimum Qualifications

A Master’s Degree in student personnel administration, developmental education, counseling, testing or other fields related to the project's objectives is required.

  • At least three years’ experience in academic advising and/or career counseling required.
  • At least three years’ experience working in higher education preferably in a community college setting.
  • Experience working in a TRIO or other similar project as an advisor preferred.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • Experience developing and conducting/coordinating workshops and mentoring preferred.
  • Background similar to that of SSS eligible participants strongly preferred.

Must be physically able to perform job duties.

Position Description

Reporting to the Director of the TRIO Student Support Services Program, the Academic and Career Counselor will provide academic and career counseling to participants in the TRiO Student Support Services Program.

  • Develop and monitor personal education plan with participants; update academic and career objectives in individual student files. (Case load of advisees)
  • Assess academic and career goals and document progress in participant files.
  • Develop and prescribe an individual support plan of interventions based on needs assessments.
  • Refer participants to tutoring
  • Conduct career and transfer counseling workshops; coordinate success workshops
  • Coordinate visits to four-year colleges and universities
  • Coordinate local industry tours for participant employment opportunities.
  • Assist with 4 yr. College applications and financial aid applications.
  • Oversee mentoring and coaching program
  • Work in the community to secure and maintain resources, develop partnerships and collaborate with internal, and external constituents to aid in providing resources to participants.
  • Maintain and update student records.
  • Administer Learning and Study Strategies Inventory for new applicants to the program.
  • Assist the Director of SSS with maintaining new, and current participant data for the program annual performance report.
  • Schedule and perform Early Alert and/or Academic Monitoring meeting with a caseload of participants, providing intervention recommendations, (such as tutoring, if necessary).
  • Maintain electronic forms for the intake process and other forms housed in the web-based form builder.
  • Coordinate the virtual and in-person intake process for new applicants to the program.
  • Maintain the applicant tracking spreadsheet to keep track of applicant status.

Perform other related duties as incidental to the work described herein.
