Minimum Qualifications

  • An Associate’s Degree is required as well as three years of experience working in Veteran’s Affairs/ Financial Aid Office at a post-secondary institution of higher learning, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Understanding of and commitment to the purpose of an open door institution 
  • Demonstrated competence in oral and written communication skills
  • Working knowledge of and experience in computer database applications including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Knowledge of Federal and State regulations, particularly those pertaining to veteran’s education benefits
  • Ability to work in a congenial and professional manner with faculty, staff and students
  • VA experience preferred

Position Description

This individual will administer the Veterans Education Program in compliance with all federal, state and institutional regulations.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintain a working knowledge of all aspects of Veterans Affairs and keep abreast of all Federal and State regulations
  • Make presentations on financial aid, veterans education benefits, and scholarships as necessary both on and off campus

Related Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a thorough working knowledge of Federal and State regulations in regards to implementing the Veterans Education Program.
  • Serve as the Veterans Affairs certifying official for the college.
  • Coordinate and maintain the Web based program (VAONCE) to timely submit and monitor information to the Department of Veterans Affairs in order to ensure compliance.
  • Counsel and serve prospective and enrolled Veterans.
  • Manage and maintain files on veterans and be able to provide required documentation to State and Federal Auditors during compliance surveys.
  • Work closely with the Registrar in regards to evaluation of prior credit.
  • Complete required forms for college/program approval to the State Approving Agency.
  • Serve as the College liaison for all outside agencies affiliated with veterans and their benefits
  • Administer the College’s Scholarship program in compliance with Federal, State and Institutional regulations and policies.
  • Access College Scholarship Fund Authorities (Endowed, Non-Endowed or Agency) and maintain for state auditors.
  • Work with Financial Services on establishing scholarship amounts to award.
  • Work with Financial Services on reconciliation of accounts.
  • Apply for, and award funds through the NC Department of Community Colleges and State Education Assistance Authority (ex: Targeted Assistance, Less Than Half Time, FELS, Wells Fargo, etc.)
  • Advertise outside scholarship opportunities.
  • Perform electronic drawdown process in Colleague.
  • Assist with Policy and Procedures manual.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Financial Aid Director or Vice President of Student Services.
