Minimum Qualifications

  • Associate degree required in Education, Social Science, Counseling, Humanities, Business, or related field and a minimum of one (1) year of related work experience is required or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of the military/veteran student experience in higher education and local resources for veterans;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to represent the program well and conduct public speaking engagements;
  • Strong computer skills;
  • The ability to work with persons of diverse populations and backgrounds.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Military experience or veteran status;
  • Demonstrated success in overcoming barriers similar to those confronting the project's target population;
  • One or more years of experience supporting operations of an office, school, or organization;
  • One or more years of experience working in a TRIO program or other similar program for disadvantaged students;
  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Social Science, Counseling, Humanities, Business, or related field.

Position Description

The Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) TRiO Program at CCCC serves 125 veterans annually from Chatham, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, and Wake Counties. The program is designed to motivate and assist veterans in the development of academic and other requisite skills necessary for acceptance and success in a program of postsecondary education. It provides assessment and enhancement of basic skills through counseling, mentoring, tutoring and academic instruction in the core subject areas. The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs. Veterans Upward Bound is housed primarily on CCCC's Sanford Main Campus, but has partner offices at Johnston Community College and Wake Technical Community College. Although the program's main office is on the Sanford main campus, primary job responsibilities will be completed in Wake County. Please note, this position will be based at Wake Technical Community College’s Scott Northern Wake Campus (6600 Louisburg Road Raleigh, NC) and the Sothern Wake Campus (9101 Fayetteville Rd, Raleigh, NC).

The VUB Program Assistant provides outreach and programmatic support for Veterans Upward Bound with the main mission of recruiting veterans to the program, and to provide program support. The Program Assistant reports to the Director of Veterans Upward Bound and works closely with the Assistance Director and part-time Program Coordinator.

Essential Duties

 

  • Conducting outreach to and building networks for recruitment among local veteran-serving organization;
  • Attending local community and veteran events for recruitment;
  • Hosting VUB information sessions;
  • Ensuring that the program recruits and retains at least 125 program participants from the five VUB counties (Lee, Harnett, Chatham, Wake, Johnston) each year;
  • Holding office hours at Wake Technical Community College
  • Assisting program staff with communicating with participants via mail, email, and phone;
  • Assisting TRiO Programs staff and Veterans Upward Bound staff with planning and facilitating academic instruction, workshops, and special events;
  • Documenting services in electronic database and participant files;
  • Attending (in person or via conference call) VUB's weekly staff meeting;
  • Preparing and submitting a weekly report;
  • Engaging with other TRiO staff members to provide formative assessment and continuous improvement of program delivery; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
