Minimum Qualifications

 

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree and five years of increasingly responsible management and supervisory experience in a student services/affairs area; preferably at a community college.
  • Doctorate preferred.

  • Proficiency with postsecondary institution compliance and legal regulations.
  • Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations.
  • Ability to work independently and make value judgments, which may set new policy.
  • Excellent communication skills. Tact, energy, and resourcefulness in dealing with a variety of situations and people. 
  • Ability to delegate and to hold others responsible in a way that instills confidence and self-respect on the part of the staff.
  • Great sensitivity to all facets of the college community, including the needs of the various groups which comprise it.
  • Ability to make the college an integral part of the total community through a variety of relevant community/area service programs and constant attention to relationships with community/area groups.
  • A personal orientation to the process and skill in the management of participatory decision making.
  • A clear and articulated understanding of equity and how to use data to identify strategies to close enrollment and achievement gaps.

Position Description

Job Summary:

The Vice President of Student Services is responsible for program development, financial management, and personnel administration for all Student Services functions. This executive also serves as primary advocate and spokesperson for student affairs and promotes the College’s value and worth to the community while building positive relationships with community leaders and organizations. As chief student services officer for the college, the Vice President is accountable for all programs and activities of the college in the following areas:

  • Implementation of policies and decisions of the President and College.
  • Compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Maintenance of productive relationships with all internal college constituents.
  • Leadership of Student Services Division and champion of college enrollment and retention.
  • Maintenance of productive relationships with all segments of the college and Iredell community including K-12 guidance counselors, school superintendents or principals, leadership from local community based agencies, and other state agencies that have an interest in the work of the college.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Recommends, develops and implements student services policies, procedures, and practices which foster and promote student learning and success.
  • Provides leadership in planning, assessing, and improving student services which meet the college’s mission and strategic plan.
  • Builds/develops all aspects of the college to promote student enrollment, engagement and retention collaborating with others as feasible.
  • Oversees the development and ongoing assessment of the Divisional strategic plan, enrollment management plan and the new student on-boarding initiatives.
  • Provides oversight of on-campus and college-wide events including, Open Houses, New Student Orientation, Awards Day and Commencement Exercises.
  • Works with department directors in the development and administration of annual budgets and collaborates with the Chief Financial Officer to forecast the need for additional funds and to make mid-year budget adjustments.
  • Serves as Data Owner for student educational records in the student information management system and approves access for any employee through the appropriate security class.
  • Coordinates, supervises, and contributes to the hiring, supervision, and performance evaluations of the directors and employees of the Division.
  • Provides supervision and counsel regarding student activities, the Student Government Association, and related functions.
  • Provides oversight for all student services at each campus location.
  • Responsible for processing all student grievance and disciplinary actions to insure due process.

 

Related Responsibilities:

  • Attends Board of Trustee meetings and represents students and Student Services staff on the President’s Council.
  • Prepares reports as needed by the President, Board of Trustees, accrediting agencies, and the Community College System Office.
  • Advises the President and President’s Council on matters concerning student activities, interests, enrollment, and persistence.
  • Represents the College in community activities.
  • Oversees and/or participates in special projects assigned by the President.
