Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education, social work, counseling or related field with two or three years of experience working with high school or college students which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Teaching, counseling, administration, social work or experience working with special populations of students is essential.   Knowledge of Colleague/Datatel [Ellucian] preferred.

Information Technology Requirements:  Must be able to operate a computer equipped with such software as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, etc.  Able to use Groupwise email and conduct research on the Internet. Operate a variety of specialized equipment such as laser and color printer, computer projection device, fax machine, photocopier, telephone, etc.
 
Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated machines including telephone, computer, copier, calculator, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Position involves mostly sedentary work, but may require walking or standing for brief periods of time. 
 
Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
 
Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability to speak to and/or signal to people in order to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to assistants.  Includes the receiving of information and instructions from the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.
 
Language Ability:  Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, books, manuals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, etc. Requires the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence.
 
Intelligence:   Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; and to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form.  Is able to deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Requires the ability to apply principles of rational systems in order to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables.
 
Verbal Aptitude:  Requires the ability to record and deliver information and to follow verbal and written instructions.
 
Numerical Aptitude:  Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers; utilize decimals; figure percentages; apply algebraic principles; and utilize descriptive and inferential statistics.
 
Form/Spatial Aptitude:  Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Color Discrimination and Visual Acuity:  Requires the ability to differentiate colors and shades of color; requires the visual acuity to determine depth perception, peripheral vision, inspection for small parts; preparing and analyzing written or computer data, etc.
 
Interpersonal Temperament:  Requires the ability to relate to and deal with people in situations beyond receiving instructions.  Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with an emergency.

Position Description

Under supervision position will provide guidance, assistance, and advocate for students enrolled in the Visions Career Development and Scholarship Program at Pitt Community College and work with other individuals and organizations to promote the academic, career, personal and social development for this cohort of students. Through identification of student needs, the Visions College Coordinator will provide available services, support, and resources to increase academic readiness, progress, and success. The Visions College Coordinator is responsible for creating and documenting a financial, career, and academic plan with every incoming student in their case load.  The Visions College Coordinator provides assistance to improve the overall well-being of the Visions students in order to maximize the successful completion of an academic program at Pitt Community College and the ability to enter the workforce. 

This position works closely with the Visions High School Coordinators to support the Visions High School program and the transition of students from the high school to the college program.   The Visions College Coordinator reports to and collaborates with the Director of Visions under the administration of the Vice President of Institutional Advancement and provides periodic written and oral reports to representatives of the Eddie & Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation. 

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this position.
 

  • Attend provided trainings to become knowledgeable regarding PCC resources, programs, opportunities, and requirements.
  • Provide strong and effective support for the College's Strategic Plan and Student Success initiatives and provide assistance with meeting the goals and objectives of the Plan and initiatives.
  • Adhere to PCC's academic policies and procedures.
  • Assist in the articulation process which assures smooth transfer of Visions high school students into Pitt Community College.  
  • Meet regularly with Visions college students to ensure each student's progression toward his or her academic and career goals.
  • Serve as liaison between Visions college students and the appropriate resourcing (i.e. PCC Counselors, Academic Advisors, Career Counselors, Disability Services, Mental Health Counselors, Department of Social Services, etc.)
  • Work with students in case load to create, document, and approve a financial plan, a career plan, and an academic plan. Creating these plans will involve:
  • Teach students how to navigate the Student Portal and other PCC IT resources.
  • Advising students on degree planning, transfer planning, as well as program opportunities and requirements.
  • Provide assistance with course selection/schedules by:
    • Advising students to balance their work and class schedule.
    • Assisting students in choosing the appropriate mode of course instruction.
    • Facilitating and managing schedule changes and PCC's Withdrawal Process for new and continuing students.
  • Assist and encourage students in the development of their individual educational plans and goals in order to achieve success and retention. 
  • Identify and contact students who are absent or tardy from class, not attending Visions appointments, failing to progress academically and/or at risk of dropping out of college and develop intervention strategies for student success.
  • Intervene, provide support, and develop next steps for students facing academic problems identified through Early Alert, as well as those facing academic probation, suspension, or other issues.
  • Provide periodic grade reviews and mid-semester check to review grades; meet with students who are having academic difficulty or who are on academic probation.
  • Identify, contact, and provide guidance for students who are dealing with issues such as pregnancy, coping with family problems, homelessness, lack of transportation, poverty, misbehavior, etc.
  • Provide crisis intervention and support.
  • Provide assistance to students who need to learn life skills such as: how to get a job, find an apartment, create a budget, etc.
  • Attend and participate in department/division meetings.
  • Attend and participate in the fundraising events (sometimes includes weekends and evenings) planned by the Division of Institutional Advancement.
  • Collaborate with Career Services to provide workshops and interventions, particularly with AGE students.
  • Collaborate with and assist Admissions Counselors, Career Coaches, Success Navigators and Career & College Promise staff.
  • Collaborate and assist with New Student Orientation
  • Collaborate with and participate on PCC committees and organizations that may potentially benefit the Visions program and its participants.
  • Advise/register students after New Student Orientation, during Add/Drop periods, and for late-start classes.  
  • Other related duties as assigned.
