Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in education or related field with two or three years of experience working with high school students.

Two to three years of experience working with high school and/or college age students.
 
Teaching, counseling, administration, social work, or experience working with special populations of students is essential.

Information Technology Requirements:  Must be able to operate a computer equipped with such software as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Access, SPSS, Microsoft Project specialized decision science software, etc.  Able to use Groupwise email and conduct research on the Internet. Operate a variety of specialized equipment such as laser and color printer, computer projection device, fax machine, photocopier, telephone, smart phone/iPad apps used for social media, etc.
 
Physical Requirements:  Must be physically able to operate a variety of automated machines including telephone, computer, copier, calculator, etc.  Must be physically able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.  Position involves mostly sedentary work, but may require walking or standing for brief periods of time. 
 
Data Conception:  Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional, structural, or compositional characteristics (whether similar to or divergent from obvious standards) of data, people, or things.
 
Interpersonal Communication:  Requires the ability to speak to and/or signal to people in order to convey or exchange information.  Includes the giving of assignments and instructions to assistants.  Includes the receiving of information and instructions from the Assistant Vice President of Academic Affairs.
 
Language Ability:  Requires the ability to read a variety of documents, reports, books, manuals, etc. Requires the ability to prepare documents and reports with the proper format, punctuation, spelling and grammar, etc. Requires the ability to speak with poise, voice control and confidence.

Position Description

Under supervision position will work with Pitt County high school Career Development Coordinators and Counselors to identify and recruit seniors in high school who qualify for the Visions program, develop relationships with students, monitor students' academic progress, provide students with mentoring and tutoring as needed, develop career exploration opportunities for students, and help students successfully transition to college and complete their first year at PCC. This position is responsible for meeting and communicating frequently with the VISIONS students in the six Pitt County High Schools, developing seminars and activities to assist the students with their academic and career development plans.

The VISIONS Coordinator reports to PCC's Director of VISIONS Program and will work in collaboration with other VISIONS staff.  The position is a 40 hour per week position and it is funded by a grant from the Eddie & Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation.  The VISIONS Coordinator will collect and maintain data and present quarterly reports to the Director of VISIONS Programs, the Vice President of Institutional Advancement, and representatives of the Eddie & Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation.  This position will also participate in activities to assist in securing additional resources for the VISIONS program.

Through identification of student needs, the Coordinator will provide available services, support, and resources to increase Pitt County School graduation rate and college academic readiness, progress, and success. The Visions Coordinator is responsible for helping and documenting that Visions students apply for Pitt Community College, pick a college major, prepare students for the Financial Aid application process, and helping students transition from high school graduation to the college level and then successfully complete their first year of college. Visions Coordinators are responsible for creating and maintaining a database to assist and support students, regularly checking academic progress, and providing follow-up and follow-through when necessary.

The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this position.

  •  Adhere to Pitt County Schools and Pitt Community College's policies and procedures.
  • Attend provided trainings to become knowledgeable regarding PCC resources, programs, opportunities, and requirements.
  •  Adhere to PCC's academic policies and procedures. 
  •  Provide strong and effective support for the College's Strategic Plan and Student Success initiatives and provide assistance with meeting the goals and objectives of the Plan and initiatives. 
  • Utilize student retention and completion data and research to inform decisions regarding student success and advisement. Collaborate with Visions Director to develop advisement outcomes and plans for continuous improvement.
  •  Work with students in case load to create, document, and approve a financial plan, a career plan, and an academic plan. Creating these plans will involve: 
  • Teaching students how to navigate the Student Portal and other PCC IT resources.
     
  • Advising students on degree planning, transfer planning, as well as program opportunities and requirements.
  • Advising and providing accountability for student completion of the placement test and/or benefitting from the Multiple Measures legislation. 
  • Provide assistance with course selection/schedules by:
    • Advising students to take the appropriate classes in order to graduate from high school on time.
    • Advise students to register for classes all the way through the end of students' first complete year in college. 
  •  Monitor advisees' progress and provide regular, customized feedback.
  • Provide periodic grade reviews and mid-semester check to review grades; meet with students who are having academic difficulty or who are at risk of not graduating from high school on time.
  •  Intervene, provide support, and develop next steps for students facing academic problems identified through the Career Development Counselors, as well as those facing suspension, or other issues. 
  • Coordinate tutors to assist Visions students who need additional academic support. 
  •  Provide referrals for services based upon individualized student needs. Refer and connect students with relevant community or school based resources (i.e. social workers). 
  • Collaborate with Pitt Community College's Career Services to provide workshops.
  • Collaborate and assist with New Student Orientation.
  •  Serve as liaison between Visions high school and college students and the appropriate resourcing (i.e. PCC Counselors, Academic Advisors, Career Counselors, Disability Services, Mental Health Counselors, Department of Social Services, etc.) 
  • Plan and implement events, food, seminars, and tours for the benefit of the students.
  •  New Student and Parent Orientations
  • Success Seminars that focus on career pathways, placement testing/multiple measures requirements, as well as test taking and study strategies, job/interview skills, etc. 
  • Summer Institute to conduct workshops and sessions for students that focus on career assessments, college life and college readiness.
  • Financial Aid Seminars to prepare parents and students for Financial Aid application.
  • Graduation Celebration to honor graduates
  •  Attend and participate in the fundraising events (sometimes includes weekends and evenings) planned by the Division of Institutional Advancement 
  •  Assist in the articulation process which assures smooth transfer of Visions high school students into Pitt Community College.   
  • Meet regularly with Visions college students to ensure each student's progression toward his or her academic and career goals.
  •  Work with students in case load to create, document, and approve a financial plan, a career plan, and an academic plan. Creating these plans will involve: 
  • Teach students how to navigate the Student Portal and other PCC IT resources.
     
  • Advising students on degree planning, transfer planning, as well as program opportunities and requirements.
  • Provide assistance with course selection/schedules by:
    • Advising students to balance their work and class schedule.
    • Assisting students in choosing the appropriate mode of course instruction.
    • Facilitating and managing schedule changes and PCC's Withdrawal Process for new and continuing students.
  • Assist and encourage students in the development of their individual educational plans and goals in order to achieve success and retention. 
  • Identify and contact students who are absent or tardy from class, not attending Visions appointments, failing to progress academically and/or at risk of dropping out of college and develop intervention strategies for student success.
  • Intervene, provide support, and develop next steps for students facing academic problems identified through AVISO, as well as those facing academic probation, suspension, or other issues.
  • Provide assistance to students who need to learn life skills such as: how to get a job, find an apartment, create a budget, etc.
  • Attend and participate in department/division meetings.
  • Collaborate with Career Services to provide workshops and interventions, particularly with AGE students.
  • Collaborate with and assist Admissions Counselors, Career Coaches, Success Navigators and Career & College Promise staff.
  • Collaborate with and participate on PCC committees and organizations that may potentially benefit the Visions program and its participants.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
  • Must have a valid NC Driver's License.
