Minimum Qualifications

The Purpose
The purpose is providing quality instruction for all students (including high school students and adults) enrolled in their assigned classes in compliance with Blue Ridge Community College's "Open Door" policy. The ultimate goal is meeting the occupational and general educational needs of the students. Classes may include curriculum, continuing education, workforce training, or other courses, and may be scheduled during day, evening, or weekend.

9, 10 & 11 Month employees will have their pay spread over a 12-month period

What You'll be Doing

  • Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Instruction and Classroom Management.
  • Areas of instruction include consumable and non-consumable electrode welding and cutting processes. Courses also include math, print reading, metallurgy, welding inspection, and destructive and non-destructive testing providing the student with industry-standard skills developed through classroom training and practical application.
  • Assist with developing and teaching continuing education instruction in welding courses.
  • Assist with teaching courses at TCC or locations specified within our service area.
  • Classroom management with regard to providing an orderly, clean, safe working environment according to OSHA and EPA standards, while ensuring that all related equipment is maintained within budget constraints.
  • Prepare adequately for all classes assigned, and conduct all classes in a professional manner. Curriculum Planning and Support
  • Curriculum review of program courses. Revision/update course content as necessary.
  • Work with Welding Department faculty to schedule courses with the approval of the area Dean for ensuring students can progress through the program in an orderly and timely sequence.
  • Mentor adjunct faculty as appropriate by sharing information, advice, and materials.
  • Develop and carry-out student testing program in all classes taught that meets College policy and standards.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports and submit these in a timely manner to the appropriate person.
  • Develop, maintain and record assessments for student learning outcomes for courses and associated program(s).
  • Prepare course schedule requests with the Dean of Advanced Technologies to ensure that students can progress through the program in an orderly and timely sequence.
  • Measure, assess, and report on student learning outcomes.
  • Program planning and support of Institutional Effectiveness plan
  • Seek out adjunct faculty for hire as needed.Student Engagement
  • Advise and register students while demonstrating genuine interest for the general welfare of all students.
  • Promote and implement program recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Provide necessary support for and referrals to the College’s educational support programs and functions
  • Devise and participate in recruiting and retention efforts with local public education units; offsite recruiting events and industry visitsProfessionalism and Partnerships
  • Maintain a professional attitude toward teaching and professional relationships.
  • Partner with local workforce and area industries for better understanding of their applicable needs, then transferring those needs into the program curriculum. Recruit industry members for the program’s Industry Advisory Committee, and schedule and conduct meetings at least once each year.Competencies and Other Expectations
  • Establish and maintain the necessary industry recognized instructor / program certifications from the American Welding Society (AWS) or National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER).
  • Maintain the technical competencies necessary to the job function, including periodic visits to area industries related to the field.
  • Ensure compliance and confidentiality with all policies and procedures of the College, NC Community College System, and applicable State and Federal agencies.
  • Additionally
  • Responsibilities encompass all classes assigned, committees assigned, or other activities agreed upon between faculty members and administration.
  • Prepare budget requests to fund supplies and equipment needed for the program.
  • Investigate distance learning delivery for course materials and offer distance learning options wherever practical.
  • Orientate and maintain a SkillsUSA chapter as Welding program advisor/ assistant.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

Education
Required: Associate degree in Welding Technology, or a closely related field.
Preferred: Associate Degree plus the American Welding Society (AWS) educator and inspector certification.

Experience
Industry experience in welding technology with a minimum of five years of work-related experience. Previous college teaching experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

The faculty member will possess strong personal and professional integrity, the ability to instruct, teach and demonstrate Welding Technology techniques in both the classroom and shop floor environments, a commitment to professional development and student success, possess creative problem-solving skills, works well with others in a team environment, good verbal and written communication skills, a solid commitment to safety, and the proper use of personal protective equipment. Demonstrated proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite or similar products, database systems, College email and website, Learning Management Software, and other computer applications associated with the position.

Physical Demands
The ability to perform all duties associated with the position including, but not limited to lifting, prolonged standing, sitting, bending, stooping, and operating or performing work with associated tools and machines.
