Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, business, marketing, communications, or a related field.
  • Three years’ experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or public information-related activities.
  • Strong writing/editing/proofreading skills.
  • Familiarity with SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and social media best practices
  • Experience with MS Office and InDesign, Photoshop or other publishing tools.
  • Meticulous attention to detail; passion for clarity and near-perfect use of language.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in journalism, English, business, marketing, communications, or a related field.
  • Five years’ experience in marketing, communications, public relations, or public information-related activities, in a community college setting.
  • Experience in web content management.
  • Experience in photography.

Position Description

The Writer/Editor is a member of the Office of College Marketing and is under the supervision of the Director of Marketing. This person is responsible for reviewing and writing marketing materials, press articles, ad copy, the College’s website, social media, and other items as needed, to conform to College style guidelines and editorial policy.

  • Line-edit and proofread marketing content and deliverables.
  • Enforce firm editorial and design guidelines to ensure that every communication contains appropriate messaging, is grammatically correct and free of spelling errors, and drives the College’s brand.
  • Suggests stories and generates headline ideas in alignment with targeted audience’s preferences and trending news.
  • Rewrites or modifies copy to clarify meaning and to conform to the College style guidelines and editorial policy, inclusive of the website, social media and internal publications.
  • Writes and edits content on the website, including the faculty/staff directory, as needed.
  • Maintains the News and Events section on the website, updates copy on curriculum pages, as well as continuing education schedule pages.
  • Reviews and writes marketing materials, magazine articles, the College catalog, and press articles produced by the marketing department.
  • Manages student information/release forms as necessary.
  • Maintains faculty/staff vita forms (print and online) as needed and publicizes employee/student accomplishments and honors in appropriate media.
  • Researches/writes press releases for feature stories and arranges/takes photos as needed.
  • Reviews ad copy to detect errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and syntax.
  • Assists and/or writes nominations packets for Excellence in Teaching and Staff Person of the Year awards, Academic Excellence and Dallas Herring Award.
  • Fulfills requirements of State Publication Clearinghouse.
  • Maintains archives of news releases and media-mentions related to the College.
