Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English or related field from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated experience with MLA and APA formats
  • Demonstrated strong organizational and critical thinking skills
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency in using multiple computer applications
  • Commitment to the use of technology in the Learning Commons and instruction
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability and effective time management skills
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to change
  • Able to work evenings and weekends if needed, and at other College locations
  • Openness and willingness to engage in professional development activities
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and without close supervision

The Writing and Reading Coach is a full-time 9-month position responsible for managing the daily operations of the Writing and Reading Coaching Center. Primary duties include providing assistance designed to promote student success for students at various levels of writing and reading. The Writing and Reading Coach collaborates with faculty to help increase awareness of services offered by the coaching center and to assist in development of skills and confidence necessary for academic success. This position reports directly to the Director, Learning Commons. The Writing and Reading Coach has the following responsibilities:
 

Specific duties and responsibilities:

  • Manage the daily operation of the Writing and Reading Coaching Center
  • Provide assistance to students both onsite and online
  • Provide academic support that promotes equitable student outcomes
  • Prepare reports and maintain appropriate documentation, including that needed for FTE recording and audit purposes
  • Maintain open, robust, and timely communication with colleagues and supervisor
  • Analyze problems and recommend solutions for the Writing and Reading Coaching Center
  • Collaborate with faculty to identify and address students’ academic needs
  • Identify and develop appropriate resources for the coaching center that support student success
  • Refer students to Learning Commons coaching centers, academic support workshops, and other campus resources and services as needed and appropriate
  • Develop and lead Writing and Reading workshops as needed
  • Maintain current knowledge of formatting style requirements such as MLA and APA, and communicate formatting edition updates to the Part-time Writing and Reading Coaches
  • Communicate faculty assignment instructions to the Part-time Writing and Reading Coaches
  • Assist with training and professional development for all Part-time Writing and Reading Coaches
  • Market and promote awareness of coaching center services among faculty, staff and students
  • Collaborate and assist Learning Commons staff with assessment and evaluation of the coaching center services and processes using data to inform decision-making processes
  • Assist in maintaining a quality learning and testing environment in accordance with Learning Commons and College policies and procedures
  • Assist Learning Commons staff with meeting needs of students, faculty and staff
  • Participate in professional development to enhance skills in meeting the needs of the students
  • Perform other duties as assigned that support the College mission and initiatives
  • Promote College mission, vision and values
